How Do I Know I Am Healthy?

We often ignore the symptoms our bodies send us. Many times, we even get used to living with illness, pain, constant fatigue, frequent colds, heartburn, bloating, or constipation… as if these were normal, inevitable parts of the human experience. If we cling to this belief, we literally close the door to the harmony we all truly desire.

Regularly observing our bodies and how they function will show us whether we are moving toward health or away from it.

Self-Observation

Ayurveda identifies 6 stages of imbalance, also known as the development of disease (Samprapti): accumulation, aggravation, spreading, deposition, manifestation, and finally, the emergence of more complex imbalances.

If we learn to observe and self-diagnose, and then take the right steps to maintain our psychophysical balance, we will never reach that final sixth stage, where self-healing becomes much more difficult. By listening to the wisdom of our own body, we can prevent disease from escalating.

The Optimal State

  • Bowel movements: At least once or twice a day (ideally the first one before 7:00 AM without the need for stimulants like coffee). The stool is well-formed (like a sausage), neither too soft nor too hard, with minimal mucus and no strong odor. It should pass easily, leave no residue on toilet paper, and range in various shades of brown (unless influenced by strongly colored foods).
  • Urine: Pale yellow in color, passing 6 to 7 times a day. It should not be foamy or have a strong odor (except after eating specific foods like asparagus).
  • Sweat: Moderate and odorless.
  • Digestion: Optimal, without gas, bloating, or cramping.
  • Hunger: Felt only after the previous meal is fully digested and the body truly needs fuel.
  • Energy: Sufficient and steady. You feel fresh and vital throughout the day without drastic energy crashes.
  • Sleep: Waking up easily, often even without an alarm.
  • Senses: Clear vision, hearing, smell, and touch.
  • Immune System: Strong; you don’t fall ill or catch colds frequently.
  • Mind: Calm and positive, experiencing a sense of fulfillment and ease in life.
  • Skin: Radiant, free of rashes, breakouts, or redness.
  • General: An overall absence of disease symptoms.

Checking Your Body’s Health Indicators

Stool: Anything deviating from the “normal” indicates digestive issues (e.g., sticky, hard, or loose stools; strong odor; unusual color; blood; residue on toilet paper; irregular movements; excessive mucus).

Urine:

  • Dark urine: Indicates insufficient hydration.
  • Cloudy urine: Can signal dehydration, inflammation, infections, kidney stones, diabetes, or prostate issues.
  • Color: Orange, green, or blue can be caused by medication, certain foods, or bacterial infections. White/milky color may indicate excess calcium or phosphorus.
  • Odor: Ammonia-like (dehydration), sweet (diabetes), or foul (bacterial infection).
  • Frequency: Frequent urination can signal diabetes, prostate issues, bladder inflammation, or excessive caffeine/alcohol consumption.
  • Foamy urine: May indicate proteinuria or kidney damage.

Skin: Any rashes or breakouts can be a sign of inflammatory processes, toxic overload, hormonal shifts, or autoimmune conditions.

Tongue:

  • Coating: Indicates inflammation or toxin accumulation.
  • Teeth marks on the edges: Signify malabsorption or a weak spleen.
  • Trembling tongue: Indicates anxiety, worry, or a stressed nervous system.
  • Cracks/Fissures: Signal poor absorption. A midline crack can relate to spinal issues or emotional sensitivity, while cracks in the center often point to stomach issues.

Nails:

  • Vertical ridges: Malabsorption, poor digestion, or toxic overload.
  • Horizontal lines: More serious illness, inflammation, or thyroid issues.
  • White spots/lines: Deficiencies in nutrients like zinc, iron, or calcium.
  • Brittle/Peeling nails: Linked to skin conditions (psoriasis, dermatitis), thyroid issues, fungal infections, or poor circulation.
  • Nail biting: Signs of anxiety or chronic worry.
  • Pitted/Wavy nails: Can indicate anemia, lupus, or psoriasis.
  • Lunula (Moons): If they are excessively large, inflammation may be present. Normal-sized “moons” indicate good digestion (ideally present on all nails, though slightly smaller on the thumbs).

Redness around the cuticles: May indicate parasites or connective tissue diseases like lupus.

Signs of Imbalance

Symptoms we often dismiss—such as bloating, gas, heartburn, heaviness after meals, frequent headaches, allergies, fatigue, recurring bladder or yeast infections, menstrual issues, poor concentration, water retention, unwanted weight gain, insomnia, or elevated blood sugar/cholesterol—are clear signals that the body is not functioning optimally.

Toxins (AMA)

In the modern world, we often live in a “toxic soup” without realizing how our lifestyle affects us. Toxins can stem from:

  • Undigested food fermenting and putrefying in the gut.
  • Absorbed substances the body cannot utilize.
  • Stagnant bodily wastes (stool, urine, sweat).
  • Unresolved emotions.
  • Pathogens (parasites, fungi, viruses, bacteria).

When our digestive fire (Agni) is low, toxins (Ama) accumulate more easily.

Signs of Toxin Presence

  • Low energy levels and a constant sense of heaviness

  • Restlessness and a lack of motivation

  • Poor digestion and excess mucus in the body

  • Accumulation of waste/secretions

  • Loss of taste and low libido (sex drive)

  • Fever or a lingering low-grade temperature

  • Unpleasant body odor or strong-smelling secretions

  • Autoimmune diseases

  • Coated tongue and bad breath (halitosis), potentially linked to tonsil stones

  • Mental confusion and impaired cognitive function (brain fog)

  • Bloating, gas, and chronic inflammation

  • Aching joints and joint pain

  • High triglycerides and elevated cholesterol

  • Atherosclerosis and diabetes (or elevated blood sugar)

  • Rheumatism and depression

  • Presence of Helicobacter pylori or Candidiasis (Candida overgrowth)

  • Gout and allergies

  • Gallstones and kidney stones

  • Elevated liver enzymes

  • Glaucoma

  • Bacterial infections and tumors
